George, I recently rebuilt the uprights and found that the lower shaft was rusted and had water mixed with the grease. I put in new bearings and shaft and coated the whole assembly with heavy duty water proof grease. I was going to use the same on the half shafts. Is this the best way to go or do you recommend regular grease? I don't know where the moisture came from, it may have been there when I bought the car. I live in a cold climate and was wondering if it is condensation.

Richard,

Water getting into that lower shaft on the rear upright is a common problem. I don't think it's condensation, its probably the result of road spray hitting the end of the shaft facing forward while the car is in operation. The water proof grease is a good idea.

The half shafts do not have the same problem. The water proof grease will work just fine, but the Mobil 1 grease will do the job too. The synthetic grease doesn't seem to dry out or get "gummy" with age like non-synthetic greases, which is the main reason I prefer it.
