We like working for peanuts. Plus, since the health care is mostly paid by the government, it saves the auto companies $ billions a year in assembly costs. Now that our dollar is getting closer to par, the advantage is lessened.

Oh, and, NO, I would NOT put that in my Pantera. Smiler
Well,

I don't know if Canada manufactures the most cars in North America .... Canada does manufacture many GM, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Hyundia cars and trucks. But with NAFTA, that car manufacturing sucking sound I here are the Canadian and U.S. auto manufacturing jobs going to Mexico (where they get paid less than peanuts).

I can't think of many cool cars currently manufactured in Canada but ... we did manufacture the Bricklin in Canada for a few years until the company went under. I thought that car looked kindah cool. Thought the gull wing doors were a good trick. Just a note on the side: One of the designers of the Bricklin owned a DeT Pantera. He liked the tailights so much he put the same ones on the Bricklin!!

P.S. (My father worked for Ford)
Hey Andriyko.
Guess where the tailights from both the Pantera and the Bricklin come from....Alfa Berlina, and the door handles; Fiat, ...the side body grills from the Longchamp also Fiat....

Hello Tai,
I am the owner (since only April this year) of the yellow pantera you saw in Calgary Alberta. If I seemed uninterested and untalkative then you must have caught me on a really bad day. Normally I love nothing more than to babble on and on about the car and panteras in general. Please accept my apologies for my behavior. This is my first post on this forum and I'm still trying to figure out how it all works. I would like to chat with and get to know as many pantera owners as I can. Again my apologies.

Hello Ottawa Doug

Thanks for the welcome. Let me start off by saying I LOVE THIS CAR !!! The first time I saw one in Toronto in 1972 it was Oh My Gawd and then I was lucky enough to drive one in 1973 at the ripe old age of 17. Obviously, I couldn't afford one at that time and then school, marriage, mortgage and children took priority but the passion for these cars never left me in over thirty years. I purchased the car in California (P.I. Motorsports) in April of this year. It's a yellow 73 with no body mods (save for the flush mounted power antennea) It has all the usual upgrades (bigger rad, brake master cylinder etc.) I bought it to drive it. No traler queen here. 3000 miles this year already. After my first summer with the Pantera I have a bunch of questions but will leave those for another day. Getting ready to put it away for the winter. That's why us Canadians love our cars so much, we only get to enjoy them for half the year. As soon as I figure out how to attach pictures I will post some.

Welcome here Doug.

The previous post was actually from Ottawa ANDY (as in: Hello from Ottawa, Doug...)

Anyway, there a bunch of us who are nuts and like you, get to only think about driving our cars for much of the year. Don't be shy about asking for help or advice. Some of us have done lots on our cars and others (Andriyko) have done everything.

Attach a photo that is saved as a JPEG with a resolution of 800 pixels wide and it'll look great.
Thanks for the welcome,

I have found one other owner in Calgary so far but his car is not yet registered in Canada. The car guys I talk to say that there are others but they are rarely driven. Hopefully I can find them or they will find me. Still looking. Hooked up with a new owner in Edmonton today and we will get together hopefully before winter but if not next spring for sure.
Thanks again
Doug M
Doug:

I can put you in touch with three Pantera owners in Edmonton. PM me, and I'll give you their contact information.

I get to Calgary every once in a long while myself and would love to meet you and see your car. Oh, and, by the way, don't believe anything Blake says about me. There's just no way I would ever drive that fast on Highway 1, and if asked by any law enforcement authority I will deny everything.

Now if we could only get Deeb to divulge the whereabouts of all those other mystery Calgary Pantera owners!

Tai:

[Stupid comments deleted by author (I missed Doug's post above). Abject apology going out to Doug by PM. Sorry guys! Will try to read posts more carefully before spouting off next time. Oh, and thanks to Cyboman for sending me a PM to discretely and kindly point out my mistake -- you're a real friend, Cyboman!]

...the second time in my life that I ever saw a GT5 (the first set my determination to have one, and I bought the third one). It was a red car that one evening pulled into a parking lot on Whyte Avenue, which is a nightclub district in Edmonton, just as a buddy and I were walking by. Of course I trotted up to the guy that got out of it with a grin on my face from ear to ear. I said something to the effect of, "Hey, beautiful Pantera" and, before I could launch into the hundred questions I wanted to ask, the guy interrupted me and said, "Yeah, it is. Just don't f---ing touch it." He then walked away as if I wasn't there and went into some club.

I sat there stunned for a while, deliberating whether I should take a key to the side of this !@#$%'s car before my love of Panteras outweighed that very strong impulse. In hindsight maybe I should have. I just loathe people like that.

Gee Peter,

Everytime some yahoo comes running over and asks me about my car, I open the engine bay, give him a history lesson and just about leave him the keys!

Maybe I should move out west and give our marque a better name!

It must be all the oilsands millionaires making you friendly cowboys look bad. And anyhow, what are they doing in Panteras? I thought they gravitated to those flashy horses and bulls?

PS: I am sending you my list of AB owners. It's probably outdated - please update it if you can.

I see you got the photo thing resolved. Your car looks fantastic! Please post some more so we can savour the details. Do try to connect with Peter — he is the official Western-Canada DeTomaso guru.

Yikes! Guru?! I've been called worse things by better people, or is that better things by worse people, or .... oh Hell, the point is I'm no guru. Everything I know I learned from you guys.

But yeah, I'd love to hook up with Doug, especially now that I owe the guy many beers to try to make up for my "shooting from the lip" incident above.

There is now a Maserati MC12 in the group, so you will have to add a flashy pitchfork to your list. Oh, and, despite not being Italian, a Porsche GT has been given sort of an honourary dispensation to tag along, since it is mid-engined and exotic-looking.

I'm going to need a new motor, methinks; 540 hp is just not going to cut it anymore.

Peter, Nah, I bet you this guy isn't going to push it, other than in a straight line. That's what I love about the Pantera, I can take it to the track and push it as hard as my 'pucker factor' will allow without too much worry.

We'll gang up on them bulls, horses and farmers with pitchforks....Western Oilsands is no more taken over by Marathon Oil Co. last week and with a new employer it seems I can't stave off the move to Calgary any longer. Although, I must admit I nearly took a severance package there last week when I found out you can't bring a US delivered Ford GT into Canada, (looking for a Heritage edition) plus it's starting to get cold in Ft. McMurray and this 10 days on is starting to where thin.

Anyway it looks like there will be 2 more Pantera's in the Calgary area by year's end.
I know you are ambivalent about the move, Julian, but I have to say I'm pretty happy about it from my purely selfish perspective. It will be great to finally meet you, and see those Panteras of yours. I will have my GT5 down in Calgary in spring, and plan to entice you to go for at least one run through Kannanaskis, and from there on to Canmore where we can visit Blake.

Are you quite sure that you can't bring a US Ford GT into Canada? From what I'm told, all you have to do is some paperwork, pay the GST, and you are good to go. I relayed your comment to a friend and fellow Pantera owner who has been planning to buy and import a US sourced Ford GT into Canada, and he was very surprised to hear there could be any problems with it. Under NAFTA, I think there are no restrictions for DOT’d and EPA’d vehicles coming into Canada because our standards are harmonized. Heck, half the cars running around the US were built in Canada, and vice versa.

Oh, and as for the guy with the Maserati MC12 in Calgary, I would not want to put a lot of money on that bet you were proposing. His previous car was a Saleen S7 TT, and he went through 3 motors and 2 trannies in less than a year. His car before that was a Murcielago, which his young daughter drives now, and prior to that he drove a Diablo that he flogged mercilessly. I have been on the track with him, and I can tell you he does not baby his cars or shrink from corners.

He bought the Saleen to try to keep up with the Enzo in the group, because there is an ongoing friendly rivalry between the two owners. However, the Saleen turned out to be a POS that was blowing up once a month, hence the switch to the Maser. Trust me, the MC12 will not be wasted on him.
Peter,

Excellent to hear you have real drivers in the Calgary area, I look forward to meeting some of them on the track Wink

Yep, I'm sure about the Ford GT, had the discussion with Canuck GT owners on the GT forum and was as surprised as your friend, after all they were delivered to both countries. I was directed to the Canadian Government's list of approved vehicles, where the 05/06 Ford GT is listed as 'inadmissable'. I'm told this is primarily due to the US having a 2.5 mph impact requirement where Canada is still 5 mph and the Canadian GT's are padded out in the nose and rear. Apparently there are 13 differences between the two countries, one being the requiremnt for dual language!

Just to twist the knife a Calgary owner knew of a Heritage that had sat in the showroom for a year and I asked him to find out more...it sold last Wednesday!
It would be great to meet up with you anytime. If the weather holds up, and you are agreeable, I could even come to Canmore. I would love to see your car and any excuse for a drive is O.K. with me.

Peter,

You don't owe me a thing, but if you want to get togather and talk cars over a couple of beers that would be great. My dad lives on Vancouver island and there is a possibility I will bring the pantera through B.C. next summer. Maybe we can work something out. Anyway, no apology neccessary, I still can't believe I left that impression on Tai.
