HVAC Condenser fan not spinning

I'll start by saying that I am no HVAC expert, actually I know nothing about it. With the engine running I change the temp etc controls to different positions then turn the AC knob to cool and I can hear a noise like something clicks but I go to the back and the fan is not on and the AC in not cool at all. I assume that the R12 (I still have the old York compressor)is gone. I have a large can of original R12 but am very hessitant to hook it up if I don't know what I'm doing. Is charging the system the first step I should do? Or check wiring as to why the condenser fan in the back doe not spin with the switch? I did connect the fan directly to a 12v source and it works fine.

Thanks, any step by step instructions to get the air working would be appreciated.
