Need an opinion.

Are intake bolts strong enough to support the weight of the engine block on a hoist? How about engine/tranny combo.

Problem is that the chains are not long enough to reach the head bolts then to the adjustable cradle. I've seen people use the carb plate adaptors to hoist a block but I'm having visions of a $3k motor smashing into my garage floor. And with my foot under it to boot.

I was thinking I could get ones that are grade 8 and a little longer than stock......

Any ideas?

TIA

Intake bolts will work fine if you use plenty of thread. If you are concerned about marring the manifold, you can instead use threaded holes in the end of the heads (that's what I do). I make sure the bolts are tight against the chain so the bolts can't bend. I'm a little afraid of the carb plates, too. It's not the bolts that bother me, it's the 5/16" aluminum threads in the manifold. But lots of people use those plates, and I've never actually heard of one failing. -Steve

inch bolt can hold up the engine. You can easily use two intake bolts with a chain to support an engine. I have done it many many times. Think about it, a motor is 500 lbs. That is only the weight of two men. Can two guys hang from a chain by two 3/8 bolts. Yep.

Beware a short, shallow angled chain can multiply the shear force on the bolt, causing failure much earlier than it would in a straight pull.

Its working.

Your photo shows a large cap distributor. This may be in conflict with the rear window.

Be CAREFUL when you install engine. Owners have broken the rear window with the distributor more than once.

Nice thing about that window though is that it is totally flat, and with the proper template, any good auto glass shop can cut one for you.
