Kinda Orange

Made lots of tests in orange too for a Countachreplica I work on. Enden up choosing this one. Painted a HD tank in it, and I think it is a damn nice rich color. It is Burnt Orange (can check the Lamboname if you want).

On the Gallardo:

1 center - seems very close to the stock orange, never one of my personal favorites.

2 left - seems too light, almost washed out

So, I really can't give a thumbs up for either.

Picking a color sure is not easy, but honest feedback is probably what you wanted?

1969 hugger orange

I am going for this effect, only with blacked out trim. I think this will look darn hot on a wide body.
The problem with taking a pic of test spots, is that the color changes in different light.

Okay, I am posting this just cause it's the 100th post. Kind of like watching the odometer roll over.

That is true about orange in pictures. Mine was recently done in a "custom color" based on House of Colors Tangelo Pearl.

This car was in Reno and is a bit lighter orange. My car is orange and will be repainted in the next year. I'm leaning toward this orange. Post pictures when you are done, I'm anxious to see it.

Throttled - Lets see some progress pics! All we've seen is your avatar and a bunch of parts being sold in the last few months. Looks like you've made tremendous headway. I don't mean to hijack this thread, so post your pics in a new gallery so we can check out all you've done.

I posted kind of a brief update of #3190 in the photo forum. It is really exciting to be getting so close to being finished with the resto and enjoy driving the car a bit!

painted the engine bay, underside of hood, trunk and wing.
It is a little tricky putting down a solid coat but the color is AWESOME!!

3914 Painted, will wet sand and buff to mirror finish next week

Between the sealer, base coats, mid coats and clear there was a lot of material used and very tricky color to paint. I am pretty happy with the results

Went back through the thread and didn't see which orange you went with? ... metal flake or pearl? Sure looks good. There's a lot of life in the color.


How much would you estimate that you've spend on paint, hardener, reducer etc?

It is the metal flake (number 2 on the test pannel) What I did not know is that it actually has a hint of pearl in the paint also. It is the same color as the pic that Lambolp400 posted of the Gallardo on the first page.
I was buying my paint from Finish Master, however they did not want to take the time to research the paint code, so I found a whole saler that helped me out. In the long run it was much cheaper at the whole saler anyhow.
I went with Matrix sealer, base and mid coat, then with Chroma Clear 7900 high solids clear. I have not totaled the reciepts yet but I estimate $1,200 in paint material. That includes enough material for painting under hoods, engine bay, jams, wing and body. It would have been a lot more expensive at Finish Master.

The orange in the picture of the lambo looks flat/dead compared to your paint, maybe just the angles or the picture. Paint has sure gotten expensive compared to what it use to be. In the late 80's I could spray a car for $200 I've sprayed non-metallic colors in Centari a few times years ago and that is pretty much a no brain paint because you can color sand all the orange peel or runs(now you know my skill level)...only sprayed metallic once. I would be hesitant to try what you've done. I'm going to do the prep work and let someone else spray it in a booth. Can't wait to see the finished result.

I apply an extra coat or 2 of clear just because I know that I will be wet sanding and buffing to get the finish I want. I just bought a new gun and was real happy to have shot this car with no runs, or saggs. I do have light orange peal on 1 quarter but it is a easy fix by wet sanding. What was tricky about painting this color is that it is very translucent. I had to use a very wide spray pattern on the gun with a little higher than normal pressure to "mist" the color on the car so I did not get those heavy lines in the paint. I also was sure to shoot the second coat in a 90 degree cross pattern. Even though I have several lights in my garage, it was difficult to be sure everything was covered properly, had to check it for half an hour before clearing.
I remember those days when I could shoot a car for $200, there are some cheap paints out there but nothing I would want on my car.
Tom, let us know what paint and color you choose, I would like to follow the progress.

Wow...it's still looks pretty shiny even though its been wet sanded. It's going to look great when buffed.

The hood vents are from a Trans Am GTA. I bought the car with the vents already installed, I would not have thought that they would have looked this good but as it turns out it they add a lot to the look.

Those are pretty nice hood vents. Can you post a picture of the underside and how they mount. Maybe this is a quick and easy mod.
