I've always been a Castrol guy, but was put in a position that I was recommending Shell Rotella because it had the ZDDP and was available in single viscosity 30 weight grade. Now that diesel engine oils have been reformulated I'm recommending (and will start using myself) Valvoline VR1 racing oil. It is available in single viscosity 30 weight and has plenty of ZDDP in it.

If you're wondering why I specify single viscosity oil, it's because the oil manufacturers use a base oil with a more shear resistant molecule in their single viscosity grades. You'll notice the straight 30 weight oil available from most manufacturers says "HD" (heavy duty) on the bottle.

Valvoline VR1 says "for racing only" on the bottle, so hopefully nobody will mess with it's formula for a long while. VR1 is readily available, so there's no reason to stock pile diesel oil in your garage.

cowboy from hell
Starting 2007 diesels moved to Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel and PM traps for all new trucks to meet emissions standards. This new diesel forced new requirement for crank case oil. I cannot recall the formulation numbers but there are now two oils. The old and the new. The hope and desire is that one oil can support both types of engines. Testing has been concerning at the least.

We are talking "big rig drivers" running a million miles on an engine with perhaps only one “in frame rebuild”. So more maintenance and cost is a serious issue to the bottom line. It will be a few years until the older engines are retired so I think Delo will be around for a while longer. If you want to play the diesel oil game make sure you get the correct formulation as it will get confusing.
