The lower one looks too modern in comparison to all the other De Tomaso scripts, especially in the style of the 's' and 'm'. I'd take a guess the top one is original as it contains the same 's' style as the De Tomaso script.

Larry Stock has just had new scripts water jet cut from Stainless for 'De Tomaso', 'Pantera' and 'Mangusta' style scripts. He'd know for sure and have a replacement should you need it.

I asked my Aunt and she said there were several changes to he script over the years. They changed vendors, and each one would make it differently. Before Ford, they were done locally, durning the Ford time, some were done with the Ford vendor, after Ford they were done by a shop in Modena.

It would be interesting to look at several over the span of the 50 years, and see the difference. I am headed to my car, longchamp, and I will post a picture.

Steve, I thought the same thing and then I went looking through my image pile and look what I found. Your car right beside the ONLY Mangusta I could find with that script (and odd placement). It's on 8Ma508. Maybe it was only on the first few cars, but all the images I have of other early cars have the conventional script located on the rear deck as we expect. I guess based on William's note that this could be a very rare version.

here is a pic of the emblems from 8MA600. The originals are above the repros. After looking at the quslity difference, i am going to restore the originals. The "Mangusta" logo has a broken mounting tab. The one that the guy is selling on ebay doesn't look like it has tabs at all.

I do not know if these emblems were mounted on the rear grille, but I will find out by inspecting under the rear hatch for holes.

These emblems were mounted on the right rear hatch.

Jay,

That is a very good photo and really shows the differences well.

Still, I think there were two (or as William suggests, possibly more) variations of the Mangusta Script. I have seen several Original scripts that look like the second Mangusta in style, but the top one is also clearly an original. I have only seen that style on one car myself, and it was 8Ma508, a very early car. Yours, at 600 is also pretty early too. I wonder if a changeover occurred around your car?

Tonight at diner with Mrs. deTomaso, I asked the question about the script and the wheel ceters. As she recalls, the script was the same for the all the mangustas, with one exception. When they were trying to get rid of the last ones, they used the detomaso script from the pantera, because they sold the cars without the any scripts, and then the germans wanted scripts. So they sent what they had. Also the centers were horizontal for the first year, and then they switched the flag to vertical. It is amazing when you ask what you will get. We
