I'm about to convert my Longchamp to a 5 or 6-speed manual transmission.

My current rear end gearing is 3:07.

Our highway limit is 70 MPH and I'm looking for effortless cruising at this speed rather than my existing tinitus induction course.

It seems I have Fords T5, with uprated parts to take the torque of my 408 Cleveland stroker or a T56, alternatively the Tremec T500 or T600.

Does anyone have any experience with these and what gear set would you advise for our heavy cars?

Thanks.

I think the new replacement cost would be prohibitively expensive and that's without clutuch, flywheel etc.

I'd rather buy new and know what I'm getting.

Good luck finding your flywheel.

You may want to contact Quarry Motors here: http://www.quarrybmwspares.co.uk/

They are not the cheapest breakers yard for BMW's but they do carry vast stock. I just purchased a basic module for my 530D for £75.00GBP.

A standard T-5 probably wouldn't withstand the punishment your 408 stroker will dish out. But these guys should be able to hook you up:

IIRC the Cleveland has the standard small-block Ford (302/351W) bellhousing pattern, so a T-5 or Tremac should bolt right up. If your block was sourced from a 351M, then it has the big-block pattern and will require an adapter of some sort. I'll let others who are more knowledgeable comment.

The Tremec T-56 is being used on the Dodge Viper, Chevy Corvette Z06, Ford SVT Mustang Cobra, Aston Martin DB7 Vantage and V12 Vanquish, and Holden Commodore and Monaro, so it should be suitably strong.

But the TKO-500/600/56 looks like your best bet:

One more thing... Tremec bought the rights to the famous Ford Top Loader years ago, and their TKO line of transmissions is the continued evolution of the Ford top loader design.
Hi Garth,

Without going to find the reference material I think I'm correct in that the 500 & 600 TKO models determine their torque handling capacity.

I imagine the T56 must be up there as well being that they can tame the latest Corvette & Viper models.

I need to go and find out what gear options are available so that I can feed this to my cam grinder.

He needs to know.

I've just been informed my new CHI heads and intake and arrived - yummy:-)

Once again thanks for your input and links.

Hi Jani,

How's your car coming along?

Yes, I unfortunitely was told to use 285/40/15's on the rear instead of 50's series!

However, in my plans is a wheel change probably to Pantera East's 10-Spoke 17's all round. I don't really want to go to 18's as it screws up the ride with 30 series rubber! Our club chairman runs 18x12's on the rear of his Longchamp GTSE Spyder with 315/30/18 treads Eeker

Phil,

IMVHO your GTS looks perfect as it is (40-series rear tires and original wheels). There are a plenty of hot rodded GTS´s but very few as clean and mean original looking ones as you have. But then again, who am I to preach any one about this issue, considering what my car will go thru´.

Really looking forward how your car is going to feel like when it´s finished. Then I can hire you for an unreasonable fee, as my personal transmission conversion consultant... Big Grin

I´ll post an update about mine in a while.
