Where do you guys with MSD units attach the small red wire to?
It is supposed to have a 12Volt source when the key is in the on position. I had it connected to the only wire I could find in the engine compartment that had any volts to it. The wire(s) all had 5Volts but I tried it and the MSD worked. It worked fine for 5+ years. When I rebuilt my engine it ran for a while then stopped and it turned out to be the MSD box (another discussion) I bought a new one and went to a 12v source in the console. It ran for a while then started blowing the bottom fuse in the fuse box. It has never blown a fuse, ever. The 12v source in the console when tested now is reading 5v. How could that be, from 12v to 5v? Anyway, I ran it now to the key-on terminal at the solinoid and it works fine but it is only 5volts again. I guess the MSD will work with 5v's but the instructions say it should have 12v's. Is there something that reduces the volts from the ignition from 12 down to 5v in the engine compartment? I just can't locate a 12v key-on source in the engine compartment.
Thanks

This may be a long shot, was there ever a wire for the elctric choke ?
Or the reverse light power wire that goes to the ZF ?
The msd should draw minimal current on the small red wire as it is the trigger wire. All the load will be on the large red and black wires.
Does your alternator have 2 small wires going to it ? one would be the stator, that would have 12 volts when the ign is on ( only).
Good luck. Smiler
