Hi all,
This feels like a stupid question but I was lucky enough to find an NOS SD510 R12 compressor (I'm staying with R12 because I have a great AC shop that still has a stash).
I bought the bracket from IPSCO -which is a beautifully made piece by the way, it's a shame no one but me will ever see it.
The pulley needs to be removed to install the bracket right?

makes it seem like there are some pretty special tools to get the pulley off.
Is that the process?

No need to remove the pulley on the compressor. Try it without the idler pulley in place. The compressor (and the new bracket) should readily mount as intended. Next put the belt on both pulleys. Then put the idler in place to provide the necessary tension on the belt.
It could be that the adapter was somewhat off when it was made. Maybe elongate the holes on the compressor with a drill bit to allow the bolt to line up.
Is there enough thread left if you shorten the bolts? It looks that it doesn't need much to clear the pulley

The one I have is 6 3/8" OD.
The only thing I found that easily removes those pulley nuts is an air impact driver. The action is such that the pulley need not be held tightly. Works on alternator pulleys, too.
The pulley that you need has a diameter of 132mm (~5.2").
As suggested above, you might be able to use a shorter bolt. Use a hex head bolt.

Thanks guys. If I use this larger pulley, it will obviously spin slower, I wonder if it's enough to make a difference.
Finding the right single groove pulley is a lot harder than I expected.
As always, it's hard to diagnose problems by looking at a photo but it looks like your existing pulley has very deep grooves for the v-belts. You may be able to have a machine shop reduce the OD of the pulley enough to allow bolt access yet still have enough groove for the belt. When installed, the OD of my pulley is nearly flush with the top surface of the belt.
Since you have a 510 compressor instead of the 508 that the bracket was designed for a slower speed should not be an issue as you have two more pistons per revolution. I would use a shorter hex head bolt.

@forestg, it's still a 5 piston compressor and mounting spacing is the same but I think you're right though, I believe it does have more displacement than a 508 (164 vs. 131cc) and might not be an issue. Let's see, 25% more volume per rotation, but 75% less turns per RPM. There's probably an elegant equation for all of this.
@davidnunn, you're making me wonder if this pulley is designed for a larger belt - it's a wide groove, maybe this thing's for a tractor or something?
If you can't find a single groove pulley in the correct diameter, just use a 2 groove pulley. I believe the 2 groove pulleys are much more common. My Sanden compressor came with a 2 groove pulley. Mind you, I use both grooves because I have Kirk Evans' bulkhead hump reduction kit.
You are right, I meant 2 more inches per piston.
I believe that you are supposed to use a stud instead of a bolt, hold the bracket out enough to start the nut, then it should clear as you tighten down the nut?
There are studs available that have internal hex drive sockets that you use a hex key on. SAE. I don't know about Metric. I don't remember what size those bolts are but certainly 3/8" is available.
Thanks guys. Appreciate the input but the problem will be hopefully solved by using the correct pulley which I was able to find on eBay.
Here it is on top of the large pulley (which is meant for larger belts too it seems).
Now if I could just remember where I put my pulley puller.
