new engine won't start

Are you sure its in time?. I would start all over with the distributor, you may have accidently bumped it out of time. Then any plug wires loose. Then recheck the coil etc connections. Hope you get it started. I had a similar problem after I messed with my holly. When the choke heated up the trottle was TOO closed. I thought it was getting some gas because it tried to start. I opened the throttle with the idle screw (I was by myself w/o a remote starter) and it fired up. Yes you could have fouled out your plugs.

It sounds like you may not be getting full voltage (+12) to the coil during startup. After cleaning the plugs and checking your timing I would put a hot jumper wire to the coil. If you find the wire going from the dizy to the coil, the hot wire goes on the OTHER coil terminal. You do not want to keep this wire on for long when the motor is not cranking as it can burn up your points if you have them. If it starts try removing the hot jumper to see if it keeps running.

Thanks for all the input. It was the timing. The shop that built the engine tested and timed it with a different ignition box. Now for the best part........ driving it.
