The sending unit has one black wire and is grounded to the block. The gage appears to have one black wire, two pink wires and one black and yellow wire for the light bulb.

What are the pink wires doing back there? do they effect the gage performance in some manner? Do you have a wiring diagram?

I'd also like to replace the bulbs with LED's. Do they exist?

First, I did have sending units fail… Even brand new ones the first two new ones did not work …. I would check that first… just ground the one wire on the sending unit With ignition on..

You can put LEDs in the instrument panels, but you have to change the  Dimmer switch with one that is LED compatible… Amazon has it

I use it and it works…I replaced my bulbs with green emitting LEDs

make sure they are skinny enough to fit snug in the socket and with ease in the socket holes - you don’t want to drop one inside the instrument!
