I recently purchased a group 4 show car, with the engine bay painted gloss dark cranberry. Just above the exhausts on the inside of the engine bay, there are a couple of real small bubbles in the paint, most likely from the high heat of the exhaust. I just drove it around today, and felt that area with my hand, and it sure was HOT. How have others that painted their engine bay dealt with this? Is there some way of putting heat insulation between the muffler and the outside of the engine bay, to still retain show appearance? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

When my 1973 pantera had a stock engine and stock exhaust systems there were no problems.
Now the engine is rebuild and delivers 460
hp, my exhausts are handmade with flowmaster mufflers and there is still no problem.
Perhaps your ignition timing is incorrect
so the mufflers can get too hot, causing
your paint problems.
Greetings, Paul Ritzen.
I think the timing is ok, as it runs real smooth. It does have just over 500 hp, so I assume that it is just generating too much heat at the exhaust. I wonder if there is some type of material I can use between the exhaust and outside of the engine bay (out of visibility). I am not sure of the exhaust type but it is shown on page 65 of the current PI publication (the car on the top photo).
Mark & Bob, thanks for the positive comments on my cars. Bob you mentioned your GT5S, in which I think these look real nice also (seems like the GT5S was the next modern updated look beyond the Group 4). Where can I see your GT5S car photos? Don't you have these heat related problems from your exhaust in your engine bay?
With some cars, where the exhaust is routed, makes a difference. The mufflers & connected exhaust pipes can be moved around a bit, so if you have yours shoved as far up as poosible, you may have to fabricate some sort of shiny heat shield. And if you like to put the hammer down, that has its own problems. On the back pg ofa recent POCA newsletter, there was a recent photo of a Gt-5 with MELTED tailight lenses after running the Silver State (a 92-mile long flat-to-the-floor event). Apparently the upturned exhaust tips were just too close to the plastic...

Drop me a note and I'll e-mail you a couple of pics.

My engine bay isn't finished so I never really noticed if my headers need a heat shield or not.
