My drive that day took me over to the coast, via the twisty route. Heading up "One" there are a few passing lane sections, but they get shorter and shorter, to the point of being useless unless you are overtaking at double the slow vehicle's speed. The last one I knew was a favorite "revenue spot". I had several cars to pass, so when the passing lane opened, and the slow cars stayed in the right lane I began my move. As I crested the hill I saw two cars in the passing lane. They were STOPPED! Yikes!
I was already along-side the first car, and figured this ticket zone was no place to take a risk, so I hit the brakes hard, then moved in behind the train of slow cars. With fairly new tires, and just bedded front brake pads, the front wheels locked up for a long moment, until I backed off, modulating the pedal for max braking. I had focused on the road hazzards, and missed the sheriff hiding in some bushes.
He chased me down, which was easy, as I was stuck at the back of a slow line of cars, his lights on, so I pulled over. He came up and I passed him my license.
Him: What was all that back there?
Me: Excuse me?
Him: You nearly hit me. (totally untrue)
Me: What?!?
Him: You nearly crashed into me.
Me: If you are talking about the last passing zone, I was passing a slower car, when I saw the road blocked by fully stopped cars in the passing lane, so I hit the brakes hard to scrub some speed, and give me a place to go, and to leave lots of space so the other cars had space to get around the hazzard. It appeared I over-reacted because these are new tires and they lock up easy, creating that smoke. Did those two cars have an accident, and that is why they were blocking the road?
Him: Registration please.

After about 5-7 minutes, he came back and said in a harsh angry and stern voice to slow down.

No ticket.

I think I may re-visit the location and take another look, on my next drive. This is really a hazzard area.
