If the gts got to $120k and the seller passed i would rethink next time. sounds like alot of $$$$$.

I looked at the car, sat in the car, in fact I lost my wife's glasses under the car when knelt down to look under it (found there an hour and a half later with much relief) and must say the condition appeared to be stunning AND original. In my opinion any original 40 yr old performance car in this condition is certainly worth what was bid and perhaps more.

I think his reserve was well north of $150K. Where else would you find a $3K mile near-perfect original GTS? Too rich for me, but there are lots of guys out there who don't have budget caps.

I also looked at the car and found it to be a nice original car, but with the paint cracking pretty much everywhere to the point of needing to be stripped and painted to make me happy as well as fixing the crushed left rear section of the rocker panel.

I think Mike is right. $120K is WAY generous. Not even worth that IMO.

Wow. No substitute for actually SEEING the car in person. Pretty rough paint and that rocker really should have been repaired before the sale. I agree that the high bid should have been plenty.

From someone not knowing much about original cars. Would any original 40 year old car have good paint? Seriously I don't care if they kept it in a magic bubble but wouldn't it show some signs of serious aging? Or is that just showing my ignorance?

If its the original paint ... the patina could have add to the value ... but not with that big smash in the rocker panel.
The positive side is the values are rising.

It really depends on how the car has been taken care of and the environment it has been operated in. My 73 still wears its original paint and while it's not perfect it still looks remarkably good with no cracking or checking.




The biggest challenge is keeping the original paint properly nourished. Over time oxidation occurs and the paint dries out, gets dull, and can eventually crack.

For 28 years I've used Meguiars #7 Mirror Glaze to "feed" my Pantera's paint. #7 contains a very high amount of nourishing oils. It is absolutely amazing what the paint looks like after an application.

I agree completely with 1973, my orange car has original paint with the exception of the nose, and is near perfect original quality paint with no cracking. While Meguiars #7 evaporates too quickly in the Arizona heat, a few good coats of Zymol wax feeds the paint pretty good, that and air conditioned storage! The last thing I want to do is eliminate original paint, unless it looks too bad to keep.

That photo was courtesy of Hemmings Sports and Exotics a few months ago when they did a buyers guide and used the car for the article. It was a local church parking lot!

Hard to believe my dad would wipe his cars down with handy oil with a rag dampened with it. His cars would have decent paint on them 20 plus years.
