My orange 73 L is beginning to experience some slight sputtering, and I thought I would start by putting some new plugs in. Any recommendations for plug types, and the gap? It has a slightly modified engine with electronic ignition (not sure of the engine components from the prior owner rebuild, but it does have more horses than stock). It seemed to start some sputtering when I changed the oil & filter & added 1/2 Qt slick 50 (but I am sure that is just coincidental).

Plug brands are like brands of beer: its a personal choice (except for Lodge Platinum which seem to be universally worthless on V-8 engines). All major US brands are fine, but I suggest you finish the job by also replacing the plug wires, cap & rotor & a new coil wire; if the missing persists, its probably in the fuel system somewhere. If you haven't changed fuel hoses within 5 or so years, be aware that the MTBE gas additive so beloved of the EPA, is directly responsible for a major increase in engine fires here. MTBE sucks the plasticizer out of neoprene making it brittle. Vibration then cracks the hose & you have a leak, then a fire. Hoses are cheap...
