The terms of service for the DeTomaso Internet Community clearly state that political discussion is not allowed. And yet, lately it seems Dennis can't even post a joke without the discussion turning political. I realize these are trying times and people are unhappy with the financial climate, and with their government. Perhaps you guys just need a place to safely vent.

My concern is that while a few members may find the political rhetoric entertaining, it may be making others uncomfortable.

Here's a chance for you to let your feelings be known. I would like to encourage everyone to vote. I will abide by the consensus of forum members IF I get at least 100 votes total. So please vote. I truly want to know what everone feels about this issue.

First off, I doubt there will be 100 votes.

Second, the terms of use are quite clear. BUT:

HOW those terms of use would be used by the moderators is a question.

Does a political based/flavored joke get deleted or given a free pass as 'humor', not politics? That seems to be how a 'joke' is handled at this point.

Does an avatar picture or text get deleted for its content? What if someone complains about dead cowboy zombies with smoking guns? Big Grin

They say, whoever THEY are, that good people never discuss religion or politics in social settings.

I've always thought that was a bunch of crap, and here's why.

If something is never discussed, how is one to ever understand another's views? How is there ever going to be an educated meeting of the minds? Resolution of conflicting views never just comes out of thin air.

It comes from talks, visits, watching and understanding.

For the most part, we here on the forum seem to do a pretty good job of keeping things civil. If any one member has been the target of slings and arrows over the years, it might very well be me. I can take it, because sometimes I invite/expect it. Why? Read what I wrote above.

Exchange of ideas is not a bad thing. Exchange of hate is a bad thing.

As long as we can tread that line respective of each other's views, I see no need for change.

As Jack would say, that's my 2¢

Larry
I agree with Larry ( may I call you Larry?) but I voted against politics on the site. I think we should come together as car guys in this forum, celebrate things we agree on. Be of like minds..lol.. I also feel discussion is good among people who disagree. I think a good system is what you see happening now, the subject is confined to the pub. I would say no political avitars or sigblocks. I would consider my own sigblock a bit harsh.
I,too, voted against it but in retrospect I should've voted for it. I'm not a member of any other forum nor ever have been. But, I imagine most forums aren't set up the way this one is. It specifically has a section, labelled right up front, that this is a non-technical aspect of the forum that is just for socializing. If someone is only interested in the technical aspects don't open it up. And, damn, I've agreed with Larry twice now! As long as it remains civil, then why not? As for the avatars/signblock I think some have been over the line and since they show up on every part of the forum, not only in the Pub, I think they should be free of politics.
I also voted against, but in hindsight would change my vote. I forgot...I can just choose to read/participate in the ones that I want.

Personally, I don't really read the signblocks, and ignore some avatars. But that one that Dave Adler had with the guy that had piercings all over his face still gives me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it!!!
I havent been on this forum for long, but I have the feeling that the most people using it on a regular basis is mostly grown inteligent individuals. Same goes for the people that are the regulars on another forum i frequet a lot: www.lambopower.com . As long as there is more than one person discussing a subject, more than one view on the matter will be written, but here we are to a degree like-minded persons, and that is the type of persons I prefere to air my thoughts for, and most often get good answers and arguments from. Personally I have not felt the changes in the economy around the world on my own, but for those who have, and feel the need to "talk " about it, I think we should let them (if that is the reason for their reactions). I vote for!
As I am one of the reasons for this poll I would like to state that I am totally against any political crap on this forum including avatars and sigs.

My avatar and signature were in direct response to the on going political sniping allowed for another contributor over a long period of time.

One of the great side benefits of this forum is the escape from the constant stress of life in general and politics specifically.

There are hundreds of forums for discussions that are political in content. The PI forum should not be one of these.

If the forum rules are enforced this topic is a non issue.

Peace, Love and Panteras /DeTomasos Forever!
I don't mind political discussion here. But, it is annoying when a non-political thread takes a turn for the worse.

It would be great if people would just refrain from pulling the douche move of making EVERYTHING political. I am speaking in generalities, not about anyone on this forum.

We have moderators, and I think they should be able to warn people that consistently pester others. And then the BAN stick should come out. I don't think this should apply to just politics, it should apply to anyone making the community a place to avoid rather than a place to frequent.

I think I could look at this from any angle and politics would be the farthest thing from my mind...

Sooo what you are saying is that George needs to post more pics of Hot Chics to get our minds off of politics? I would vote for that. Big Grin

Personally I come here to talk cars, I like it when people have pics of their cars as their avatars and have car oriented topics.
If I want to talk politics I am sure their are forums for that also, why should it be this one?

I don't want to know your political affiliation I want to know about your PANTERA!

Personnaly I voted against it.
I dont want to read a politics based statement in someones avatar or signature when posting on the Forum. If people want to have a political discussion then that is what PM's are for.

The PIBB is my "Happy Place" lets not screw it up! Wink

When you put it that way, I think I had better vote !!
Personally I am not that fussed if it is in one area, ie Pub.
But sometimes it can leak into other areas as well.
However, ( not saying it can happen here)people can get very cranky over things like this !!
imagine if there was a 'religion ' section !
I'm new to this forum, but not forums in general. I don't mind personally. If you are making political statements in your sig, maybe you just need to go recruit where people care. That is obnoxious, but if someone wants to throw up a political or religious ideology then I'm for it.

Anyone who does risks being challenged by opposing views, and if you ask me they are open game for being ridiculed if they so choose to be. I just don't want to see people bring up a heated topic and then go crying to momma about how everyone ganged up on them. No reference here obviously since I'm new, just something I've witnessed numerous times on other forums. Now opposing views should not be personal attacks, but unfortunately many times personal attacks are being made toward people who may not be on the forum, so I'm not sure how you moderate that. Well now I can admit something. My name might be David B (or deeb previously) but my real name is Deb. As a girl, I find it offensive coming here to talk cats and being hit with pics of partiallly naked women.

I find it repulsive and chauvanistic to be treated like an 'object' instead of the intelligent woman that I am. Which brings me back to politics.

I don't belong to any other forums, and cats - well very young ones - are my main interest. But I sure like to take a side (any side) and try to pitch a point of view. Even if it's a little 'out there' and even if I don't really believe it. It makes for interesting banter and as others have stated, allows us some perspective even though most of us are pretty set in our ways.

And for those of us in the frozen north, we need something to do to get through these long winters that our Panteras spend under covers. Imagine months of lousy weather where we have nothing to look at or play with.

Arguing about stupid politics (with you men) is a great way to pass the time.
