The stub axles come out with the side plates. I used a couple of pry bars on each side of the side plate once all the bolts were out, to gently pull (pry)it out of the case. It's a neat fit, but no slide hammer needed. A snap ring on the inside of the sideplate holds the axle in the sideplate.

The differential assembly(with ring gear) cannot be removed from the case till the inner races of the carrier bearings have been pulled off. Unfortunately, it takes a special puller to get them off. I spent 2 plus weeks of evenings making special tools, pullers, mandrils to remove bearings, etc, as I disassembled mine.

Be sure to check carrier bearing preload and backlash on the ring and pinion during assembly, especially if bearings are replaced or new sideplate gaskests of a different thickness are installed.

An "Assembly, Maintenance, and Operating Instructions" book is most helpful.
Good Luck!
