My rear axle is broken and I don't know how to fix it. I'm wondering if someone out there has any advice. IT seams that my axle either has been worked on before, or it came with some sort of a sleeve bonded to the axle where the roller bearings are positioned. One of these sleeves has broken down and the bearing started spinning on the axle shaft. I can email a picture of it to someone who might be able to help me out. After talking with some Pantera folks, they suggested that I have a machine shop build a weld in the void, then machine it back to the interference diameter for the bearings. Does anyone else out there have what looks like a copper section built into the shaft where the bearings are seated?

Stock axles are hollow, and are of a soft steel.
Your situation is not uncommon. Adding back material is one method, but I suggest just replacing the axle. Getting a cheap good one from Ron would work. The alternative is an "aftermarket" steel axle (much stronger than stock). The time, effort, and $ invested to complete the task might motivate you to go with the best you can get...but stock ones have lasted a long time. Think before you leap. Once you open the can of worms of "upgrading", you can consider upgraded bearings, tapered roller bearings, including exchanging your upright(s) for one ready-to-go from the various vendors. Some parts are stamped either S (left) or D (right).

Good luck !
