Hi Loyd, I going to have my case opened and have everything checked out, hence some questions.
1- The ringbolts look ok and still have a good serrated flange, If they are to be loctited and safety wired why are New bolts recommended?
2- On the ring gear and the pinion there are engraved markings which I was informed was called clocking? Also this juncture was where the ring and pinion are to be remeshed. Is this true and what is the reason?
3- The 5 socket head cap screws 100, 80, 60 & (2) 40mm length that fasten the two main case sections together, can they be safely replaced for a polished case situation with regular strength stainless steel bolts?
4- The orange factory parts binder doesnt show a gasket between the gear housing and the gearbox cover. Is this correct?
5- In the same parts binder the last 3 ring & pinion differentials listed are 4.22, 4.621 & 5.251. My ZF was outfitted with a 4.22. What do you know about the performance changes using the other options?
6- Also in the same binder the synchros are noted to be (steel), is there a recommended alternative?
7- The binder shows a plug ( # 07613A ) which on my ZF is on the right back top, which has a square head attached to the plug. Is this intended for a fill hole and if so would you recommend enlarging this orifice for easier filling.
8- Any critical does and donts for this rebuild project other than replacing the thrust washers in the diff. would be greatly appreciated Also where can I obtain the factory assembly . specs. and tolerances
Thank You in Advance Vince

#613 size is 10mm x 1.0 (1)On the ring gear bolts they strech out plus they still have the serrated head so I would not reuse them. (2)Install the C.W.P. with the timming mark, that is where the factory set the back lash at the time of lappeing,(3) yes you replace the bolts with stainless,(4)No gasket just sealer,(5)If you go with a shorter ratio you gain low end and a taller ratio you get top speed or lower rpm,(6)the gears in you box are designed to have steel only,(7)NO this is a plug hole that was cross drilled for the detents,(8)Call me on this one.
Thanks for your response Loyd. Those long 8mm socket head bolts referred to in question (3) are marked 10.9 strength, are you saying that regular strength U.S grade 5 is ok? Also I would like to phone you re: question (8), please let me know your Tel.# and best time to call.
Thanks Again Vince
