relay boxes by fuse box

Watch for loose ground screws for these relays. On Denis' car, the funky insulation has been removed. As built, the relays were just installed on top of the insulation and screws driven thru....and over time, the insulation thins out, things loosen up, and stuff starts to get hot, soft, and ends up looking like the RH relay in the pic above!

I had some luggage push against one of these "warm" relays to the point that it caused the case to contact the relay closures and hold them shut....leaving my fans running continuously....this was after a 10hr blast back from Vegas...years ago. I think I installed a newer Bosch type relay....and socket.

I've got so many questions...but just for 3 cries for help;
1. the 2 relays in the trunk, are they individually for the cooling fans ? How are they actuated ? I've got the schematic from Hall Pantera but these relays are not shown...

2. What is this box on the firewall? To the right is the horn relay (for the air horn, the city horn doesn't have a relay). But what is the silver box ?

3. Can anybody give me a picture of the wire (colors) attached to the alternator ?

Those bits are "don't knows"! Since you are in the trunk... or front boot....and not in the boot behind the driver's seat....I cannot tell you! Because relays in this location are not normal.... as they would be in the left rear boot!

The picture above, in Denis' car are for AC/Lights and for the Fans....or something like that.......DeT mixed up the stuff that they feed.....as I said, I melted one down and it ran the fans.....and I believe the other one does the AC and other stuff....tach? Guages?

I have not seen a wiring diagram yet with these two relays in the schemat's...

You appear to know that the one on the right is for the fans......but it doesn't appear that there are any wires on the LH unit????

This would make me go "huh"?

I have not seen any cars with anything like this....not saying that it doesn't belong there....just not familiar with it!

OK, let's try this differently.....your pic had me upside down....
1) Two relays near fuseblock: AC and Fans are primary functions.

2) Mystery silver "relay" under dash: Don't know. Are there wires going to it? Can't see in picture. It "could be" for e-flasher or turn signal flasher.... Any name/numbers stamped in it?

3) Denis nailed it pretty good with that pic!

PS: Denis, is your alternator still the small 55 amp version? I know Bosch made some bigger ones in the same format (rear view) but yours looks nice and shiny.... With the new fans, I could use some more amps....just for margin....they are not easy to come by!

Sorry I didn't give enough detail; these 2 devices are on the interior firewall, so under the dash...(I pulled out the dash for a re-leather, I'll send pictures later). So these 2 devices are behind the wiper speed control.
The black box to the right is definitely the FIAMM horn relay; the left most (brown) wire comes from the Country/City horn switch, the big honking white wire goes to the Fiamm compressor.

For the cooling fans...I guess my question is; do the fans ever come on automatically? Looking at the schematic;
1. The (2) cooling fans are hard-wired in parallel.
2. They won't run unless the Fan switch is on...the output of the fuse block goes to the fan switch, the outputs of the fan switch are to the Radiator Fan Light in the speedometer and also to the 2 fans themselves. So any relay is upstream of the fuse block.

So the question; the radiator has a thermal switch at its base, does it drive the relay ? If so, that would make the toggle switch on the dash an over-ride only...

Yes on 1 and 2.

Generally the fans are wired direct to the dash switch only. After smoking a couple of switches, I finally installed a relay to take the load, behind the dash somewhere around the back of the radio... When I put my new fans in, I also put one fan on a controller to automate it...where the second fan remains in manual mode.

I would think that any other wiring (the thermal switch) you have for the fans might be owner induced at some point.

Hi Lee, glad you're moving ahead on the car...wanted to chime in on the silver box circled in your photo - afaik this is the emergency flasher relay, it's an undesignated SIPEA part. (Very similar relays were used on Lancia Betas - A72013 - and I understand various FIATs have the same or similar part). Regarding the Hall diagram, I believe this part is labeled "4-way flasher" on the left side of the diagram; it's mixed in with the instrument panel switches which is confusing. As far as wiring goes, with the unit mounted in the car, the wires are (left to right): black, brown, then blue; the last connection is blue/black, and goes to the pin ahead of the blue lead (i.e., closer to the front of the car). Top to bottom on the Hall diagram, I labeled the wires: blue/blk, black, brown, blue. Fairly sure this is correct, welcome comments!

Nate, terrific, this all agrees...and explains a few things (esp, what those blocks were along the switches...); the Blue and blue/black wire are the turn signal lights, the brown goes to the emergency toggle...I haven't figured out how the flasher plays into this electrically, but here is the pic now... Is the black on the correct row (in line with brown and blue) ?

Steve, I've got another question on the fan switch...! I started putting in wiring for an automatic switch, got the plumbing in place, then wondered; What is the value of that switch in the radiator ? 8ma1046 and 1076 both had it, but its not used for the water temp gauge...What does it do ?

Lee that is for the thermo switch to automatically turn on the fans when required. I believe it is a Jaguar part.

Now you guys have ME wondering about my country horn relay.....like if I even have one!

Have been under there a bazillion times dorking with the clutch cyl, the master cyl, the drip tray, steering linkage, burned up ignition switch....but can't remember these two relays....
