from the first time i had heard of the heat gun and scraper technique, i thought that there had to be a better way, it really does not seem like a lot of fun..

i have found that por's "marine clean" product is a really good cleaner and degreaser, plus it is water based so it is nonflamable. why not get a small pump, like a sealed water display pump and use it to continuously pump the degreaser over the surface until the undercoating dissolves.

"marine clean" seems to put the dissolved materials into a suspension as opposed to a solution, so large amount can be cleaned even with real dirty solution.

If you have an excuse to remove the engine, do it. You will likely save more time than it takes and you'll get a better result too.

Also, if you're going for a stock-like look, consider the Truck bed liner spray option. Tough as nails and easy to clean. Heavy black texture but it can look very nice.

Good luck!
John, i heard the same thing at the tech session "Spray on bed liners are highly flamable" They did mention one product "snake skin" i think, that was your best option if you choose to redo your engine bay for the original look, that or paint depending on the year of your car. Chuck
John & Chuck.

Interesting information. I tried searching the web and there isn't much information about this issue (certainly compared to the toxicity risk during unsafe application). Possibly because fires don't break out in pick-up truck beds all that often. Has anybody tested it to see how flamable it is compared to the originally-applied petroleum-based tar undercoating we all loathe?

I did find this:

quote:
SPEEDLINER has been tested and approved in accordance with the United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 302 to provide the acceptable flammability and flame propagation rate for coating applied to motor vehicles.

I do know of a few Panteras (and one was years ago) that have had this done (not mine) as well as some GT40 guys who have done it as chassis protection. Do you have any further details about which brands were a problem/incidents etc.? Did Mad Dog have this in his car? Wink

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
At the Tech Meeting on Sat.it was brought out that you should never use bed liner because they are all highly flamable.

Yup, Ted Mitchell said that. And I thought to myself, gee...I've got my engine bay sprayed with that stuff.

And then I thought to myself, my engine bay has a 20 gallon tank full of gasoline, too.

So upon getting home from Vegas on Sunday, I scraped off all the bed spray and removed the gas tank.

I feel so much safer now.

Can't drive the car, but oh, so much safer.

roll on floor

Geeesh, it is a CAR.

DRIVE IT!!
I removed mine from not only the engine bay but also the entire underside of the car. I used a propane torch and putty knife. Heat until it starts to bubble and then scrape. Once the majority is cleaned off, then use Kerosine to wash off the remainder.

Others have had good luck with dry ice and a hammer. Fine in the engine bay, but tough laying on your back under the car.
Ted, made that same comment last year when he looked at my engine compartment with the Trunkliner.

I replied, "and the original tar is not flamable?". He did a 180 and walked away. Not sure how to take that response.

I have to agree with teach peace. It's a car. Given enough time and heat most things on the car will light up real nice. How many of us have smoked a wire or two on their car?

Ah yes, the SS fire.

Watch, and cringe, as the firefighters ??, who have no idea the wheels are magnesium, hit them with water. And then watch as they try to pry open the front hood, from the front.

Understandable, but still kinda Keystone Kops.

And yes, that car is the one Dennis still is running. It truly came back from the dead.
