Replacement Belts? Main Jackshaft

OK, I'm fit to be tied....with websites and belt manufacturers telling me one thing and selling me another.....ugh!

What belt are you running on the main jackshaft drive?
UPDATE 4-11-11 GATES 9480HD (13A1220) fits better than the 9485HD mentioned below!!!)

I found a Gates #9485HD (48.5" long) (13AV1230 metric= 13mm wide by 1230mm long) fits with the adjuster all the way out at the end. It will work for now, but once it wears in, it's time for a new belt as there will be no adjustment left...unless maybe I machine the base of the pulley standoff down to a smaller diameter!

I ordered a Goodyear 17481 which the websites claimed to be a 13A1225 size, but when it got here, it was a 13A1220, which I had already determined was not going to work...in a Gates equivalent. Well, tonight I tried to get the smaller Goodyear belt on..... no way. No how.

For the idler belt which would continue to drive the water pump if the main jackshaft belt failed is a Gates 7335 (Goodyear 15335) 11A0850 metric size works best. If all else fails, an 11A0865 size will fit but will have less adjustment.


As for belts on the ass-end of the engine, for the alternator and or AC pump, or smog pump....your mileage will probably vary! I have seen so many different combos of jackshaft pulley and component placement that I don't even want to suggest that what fits my car would even come close to your car.....but I'll post it anyway when I get that far!

OK, guys, here's a problem!

My 13A1230 belt, after running for a few hundred miles, needs some more "tight" added to it....

Problem is that the adjuster is all the way out to the end of it's travel!

A 13A1220 belt will not go on the pulleys......

I again pose the question...what are youse guys running for a main jackshaft belt???

If I cannot find an inbetween belt size ie 1225(mm) in length, then I either run a flat idler pulley on the belt, or I have a larger pulley cut for this!

Greetings!!!

That is most interesting, that your water pump/idler belt is longer, but your main jackshaft belt is shorter than what I mentioned in the first post! Since I now believe that I have all stock pulleys, the only variance should be the height of the jackshaft bracket itself...and it should be pretty close! I had to take some metal off of the stands (NOS bracket) to get the front two holes to line up with the bracket that attaches to the water pump.....the way it came, the J/S bracket was too tall!

Of course I had a Goodyear belt, instead of Gates.... They must have different rulers in their marketing depts!

I'll order one of them up and see what happens!!!!

Alternator and A/C belts will be all over the map since the location of the alternator varied, as did the type of rear jackshaft pulley!

I ordered and just successfully installed the GATES 9480HD (13A1220) in the car as the main jackshaft drive belt!!!!

FOR ALL OTHERS: your mileage may vary!
No, actually, I mean that a GOODYEAR belt of the same size may not fit your car!

I had tried a Goodyear 13A1220 when I had the engine out, and no way could I make it fit!!!

One thing I like about this Gates belt, is that it is of the Heavy Duty "Greenstripe" variety, just like their coolant hoses of the same name!

This one fits like a glove, and the adjuster is in mid position with the belt snug. I expect that after running it a few miles that it will loosen up a bit, just as the other belt did!

I feel a LOT better about this now!!!!

FWIW, my favorite machine parts supplier - Manhatten Supply- has in their giant 12-lb, 4500 page catalogue a listing of vee-belts by length, many in 1/32" increments. The alt pulls less than 1 hp, so fractional belts work fine. Incidently, MSC's paper catalogue is free and has a 103-pg index, but if you're a computer whiz, the entire catalogue is on-line at <www.mscdirect.com>, or as a CD-rom by mail. These guys do 98% of their business by mail order; they once found me a left-hand metric tap to fix a kid's bicycle, and overnight-mailed it by itself for $3! And yes- they are in New York. I've done business with them since 1995 with no complaints.
