I am replacing my mufflers and want clear access to them without tires on the car but want the suspension fully compressed. Any reason why the car can't be placed on jack stands under the rear uprights to load the suspension?

...Shouldn't hurt. Put Wood or Rubber Between to protect The Surface from Galling. An Amateur ALWAYS Leaves Their MARK! A PRO...Leaves NO Sign, They were ever There!! Be sure the Stands are centered and secure, so they can't Slip Off. Actually, What I do is Stack-Up Large Lumber Blocks under the Uprights, Evenly. It's More Safe from Failing. MJ

For muffler work I use jack stands on the chassis and a jack under the upright to allow me to move the suspension through the full range (shock removal usually required). It's a PITA but allows you to ensure there is no exhaust interference during suspension movement.
