I'm doing the modification to my shifter where I've pulled out the snap ring, removed the cap that holds in the spring and removed the spring. Does the cup the the spring sits in need to be removed also in order to complete the modification. I've tried to remove the spring cup but it won't come out. It doesn't appear to be held in by a ridge but something inside. It moves up and down but won't come out. Should I just leave it there? I've read some of the previous posts from guys who have done this mod and one suggests filling the hole with grease and then putting a quarter over the hole. Any one think that's a good idea? ...I'am the person who first put the Quarter down the empty hole, after first putting an amount of grease in. The Quarter does 2 things besides being a Perfect Fit and everybody has one; it first keeps dirt/dust/grit from entering the 'Rod Sliding' Bushings(from the top side anyway; Second, the slight 'penny weight' will cause the grease to CONSTANTLY ooze through the 1/4" hole at the bottom. In effect, becoming an 'Automatic lubricating device' for the shift rod, at that point. Karlc, you need to Know that as long as you leave the 'Spring Cup' in; the grease you have packed on top, will not get past the cup, and will have NO lubricating effect. Regards, Marlin.
