The "bypass" is the brass plate. You only need the model WITH Bypass if this brass plate is no longer present in your block.

I agree with larryw. If you buy one from TMeyer, you’re assured that you’ll get a correct 351C thermostat.

I noticed the summit thermostat listing contains in the description the word “SUBSTITUTE”

this causes me to wonder, and worry, what they are trying to say. They either are selling the correct thermostat or they are not selling the correct thermostat.

calling their thermostat a SUBSTITUTE - and in BIG block letters so everyone notices - makes me think something is different.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Wondering if you shared this photograph with the vendor when you inquired about it being incorrect for a stock Cleveland engine??

I imagine it could be possible the vendor purchased an incorrectly labeled thermostat and innocently resold it to you.

but if you shared this photograph, and they still said it works just fine for them, in that case, we have a vendor with a SERIOUS lack of knowledge.

I think this thermostath will work, have them seen on several 351 Cl.

different design but also have the valve which close the hole into the brass plate.

Simon, that is not the correct style thermostat for a factory-correct Cleveland engine. There are no ifs, ands or buts about that.

It is not correct.

The reason you may have seen those in Cleveland engines is because vendors and owners do not know what is correct‼️

The only situation where that style thermostat is functioning correctly in a Cleveland is only when the factory installed brass block off plate pressed into the engine block has been completely sealed.

if the factory brass block off plate is still installed, that style thermostat will serve to diminish coolant flow through the radiator and will contribute to higher coolant temperatures  

just because it will fit in a Cleveland does not make it correct for a Cleveland

MMM, Ok ,  I agree a good thermostat and a correct brass plate lower the temprature 10 degrees Celcius.

But when the hole from the brass plate is to tight it can be closed and thermostat dont will be closed

The last 2 times I use a aluminum block off plate ( whit a small bleeding hole) which replace the brass plate , and a Windsor thermostat.

OK, with the engine block bypass plate replaced with a solid replacement, except for a small bleed hole, THEN a Windsor thermostat is acceptable.

I just don’t understand,  when the OEM-style block off plates and thermostats are readily available, why anyone would modify the Ford engineered cooling/bypass system. 🤷‍♂️

I described to him that this t-stat won't seal the orifice below, I think he perfectly knows what he sent me but claims to be the correct one.

I just received the thermostat from Summit, the dimensions are identical to those of Robertshaw found here:

We agree and the important dimension is therefore the diameter of the flanged copper sleeve which measures 11/16'' on the Robertshaw thermostat.

That's why I measured the flanged sleeve from the one sold by SUMMIT and it also measures 11/16'' (17.46 mm):

So I don't see what law of physics could prevent it from shut off the bypass properly.

It would be all the more surprising since I have just noticed that the packaging bears a label with the SUMMIT reference on one side and on the other side:

The only reason I chose SUMMIT over Flowkooler was because I had something else to buy from them and was saving Flowkooler postage.

So there is no reason to be upset.

Yes, today I got my T-stat from Summit as well - I do not think this won't work! I tested it in hot water (180F), it really opens up wide. It will close up the bypass and it will allow a good flow rate for sure.  I cannot image this is in any way different then the original one!
