You can check the speedo cable and ZF adapter, by remove the cable from the speedo. Then jack up the rear wheels on jackstands, start the engine, put it in 1st and let it idle. Look closely at the cable: if the square end is rotating as the tires ae rotating, the problem is in the speedo itself. If not, pull the cable from the right angle adapter on the ZF and verify that its not broken, and that the little cable-drive thingy in the adapter is rotating. If not, the trouble is either the right-angle adapter or its internal driveshaft. But be VERY careful in removing the right angle adapter: below it, held in by a little 10mm hex-head bolt, is a 3" long driveshaft that WILL FALL INSIDE the ZF if you remove the bolt! The right angle adapter will come off without disturbing that critical bolt. Now, you're on your own: I've never rebuilt a right angle adapter.
Well, I jacked the car up and let it idle. Once I removed the speedometer cable from the adapter, I sun it CCW with a drill and the speedometer showed movement. The protrusion where the cable goes into the trans adapter was not moving. So I guess that either the adapter is bad or something in the trans that drives it is disconnected or broken. I tried to remove the adapter but only spins untill it hits the trans case (about a 1/4 of a turn. How do I remove it? Also, if the speedometer drive shaft has come loose, can it be fixed without removing the trans? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

You need to rotate the hex portion of the adapter - it sits close to the ZF case - not the entire adapter.

Twist it CCW to remove. These are fine threads, and they may be stiff, and getting a wrench firmly on it is basically out of the question - patience will overcome. Wink

Bear in mind there were different makers of the adapters, and differently geared versions of both - four possible choices.

If replacement is needed, make sure you get a proper replacement.
