I have recently driven my car off road and damaged the drivers door (Colorado rocks), which will be repaired. However my steering rack has play on the drivers side when you pull out on the wheel it moves 1/8" and returns back to normal. I had prior removed the steering rack and added new bushing and oil, boots etc. and did not notice this play before. how do I check for damage? no noise and turns freely.

If you're speaking of the left road wheel moving in & out when pulled on, you could check the adjustable joint between the rack gear and the left steering arm. There's a stiff spring in this joint and you may have collapsed it, or at least changed the adjustment in the connection. A chipped rack gear or steering pinion would give a notchy feel to your steering, so the problem may not be the rack assembly.
