I took the alternator to be bench tested and they guy said it was fine. So what could my problem be? I am positive there were only 2 wires I took off the old and reconnected to the new one. One is big and comes from the batter thru the ammeter. The other is from the ignition I believe. This has the internal volatage regulator. I have installed it 3 times now and am getting sick of doing this. I would like to get it right and put the car back together. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hey Tom... Another point to consider (at least what I ran up against) is that the alternator warning light on your dash needs to be considered. If that light is out or the connection is bad you will not be able to get it to charge. A simple little thing like that is key and can be frustrating if you do not think of it. Ask J. DeRyke for more specifics on it.

Obviously there's a change in the alternator wiring from old to new. What was the new alternator originally used for? I'd find out what car it was intended for and compare wiring schematics between that & your specific year Pantera. And as I remember it, the small wire goes to the old regulator which then had 4 other wires connected at various place thru the molded connector. Did you get directions for installing the new conversion alternator? I don't believe they are plug-&-play.
I replaced the alternator with the exact same type. It has the internal voltage regulator as opposed to the external. This is what was on the car and working when I bought it. Two wires only to the alternator.
I have to believe the internal regulator is not increasing the voltage when it sees the increased demand on the battery. I plan to take it to a local alternator shop and have them full test it, not just bench test it where it shows the basic voltage at idle.
