I would like to know if the early pushbutton Panteras had a stock side mirror as an option or standard equipment. I am purchasing a early pushbutton Pantera and it has some type of after market mirrors on it. I would like to restore it to original. However the early photos of the car seen in Car and Driver and Road and track did not show any original mirrors. Does any one know of what is original on the early pushbutton cars. Thanks in advance. All USA Panteras came to our shores with NO mirrors installed.

They were not stashed inside the car, or sent in separate boxes. The selling dealer usually grabbed a stock Ford Mustang mirror from his parts department and put them on. These are available for about $50 in reproduction form.

In the August '09 POCA Newsletter I printed the Ford dealer installation directions for the mirror into any car, for that exact mirror in Larry's post. While the mirror is called 'right-hand', the identical mirror assembly will fit either door of a Pantera and will work well. The directions mentioned a part number (#17683) but since this mirror was used on Ford sedans from about 1965-up, the p/n may no longer be valid. I got my pair in excellent condition from a wrecking yard for a couple of dollars each.
A while back I did a search for the original mirror that was installed by the dealer on my '71 Pantera (#1490). The Ford number that I came up with was D4AZ-17696-A (I know, that's a '74 part number). The search lead me to Auto Krafters in Newmarket, VA.

At that time, Auto Krafters listed that part number as being a genuine Ford part, but they were out of stock. They did stock a D4AZ-17696R, which is a reproduction of that Ford part number. I purchased the reproduction mirror. It is virtually identical to my original mirror except for one very, very tiny exception. Even if you have the original Ford mirror to compare it to, the difference is difficult to detect.

Here is a link to the mirror on their website:
