I have a problem with my steering colum. My Pantera is a grp4 clone, and is running with big brake's and wide soft slick's.
When the slick's are getting hot and sticky and under hard braking, There are vibrations in my steering wheel. At first I tought it had to be the brakes. It wasn't so. It is the steering colum. The mounting bracket under the dash is just flexing to much. So I have reinforced it with some bracing. It improved a lot, but it is still present. It is not uncontrollable but annoying.

Now I took this photo some time ago. I know it is a totally modified steering colum, but it would also solve my problem. Is somebody using a system like this? It has to be a bearing that supports the mid of the first part of the steering colum.

My GT40 replica has exactly the same problem and relies on the same heim joint style mounting. It comes down to the fact that the heims are not enough of an interference fit to keep everything tight.

I would recommend switching to a more robust true bearing race with interference fit.

I am pretty sure it is the steering column. There is no slack ( sorry for the bad englisch ) in the turning movement, but it is easy to move the steering wheel up and down. Actually, if you have a look how it is build, it is a mirical that this not a common problem. The steering column is mounted under the dash with two " collar brackets" only a couple of inches wide. From there to the steering wheel is a proper leverage.
If you go down from these brackets you first get what we call a knee connection. Then it pierces the bulckhead through a rubber collar and an another two knees to connect to the steering rack. So the steering column is only mounted to the car through these close collars and the steering rack. Not paticular a sofisticated design.
To solve my problem, I have to stabalize my steering column, and was wondering how many people have this problem.
