Dear Loyd
While I have the transaxle out I removed the inspection plate. I found the inside of the case to be spotless, the trans oil was very clean, the ring gear is safety wired and the ring and pinion look new if not very close to new. And the magnet in the drain plug was also clean.
My concern is that during the Tech inspection at Pocono back on Labor day. Jumpin Joe Moore grabbed and pulled up and down on the inside u-joint on the driver's side and said that he thought that it had a bit to much play in it. He asked if the gear box whined, which it does not. He suggested that it might be worth having someone take a look at this and fix the free play in this stub axle's bearing. He also said that if it started to whine, that I should park it and get it fixed.
So now I have the transaxle out and on the bench. Can I simply pull those side plates that appear to be holding the stub axles in and fix/adjust it?????????

What do you think....................Jersey Doug.H #6434

With the box out of the car, can you move the stub axle in or out, up or down? If So
yes you can remove the side cover and replace the bearing and or re-shim under the snap ring that holds the axle in to take up the free play. You can call me (714)516-1215 @ RBT and I will talk you through it.
Thanks for getting back to me. I can pull/push the axle flange for the u-joint up and down, I guess that would be radial run out. There is a difference in this radial run out from side to side, not alot but it is there. AS for in and out, they are the same and with very little movement.
So I think you just said to me that I can remove the side cover, remove and service the AXle and it's bearing and replace it into the trans without effecting the ring and pinion. Is that right? Hhhmmm... ZF, strong AND user friendly! While I am replacing this bearing, do we now make better bearings than those that originally came in this box? And are they worth installing? Thanks again for your thoughts..............Doug.H
