you need the whole VIN to determine what year your car was built. Apparently the factory would take cars out of production for one reason or another for a period of time and put them back in after awhile. To check when your car was built look at Chuck Melton's websit at http://www.geocities.com/provamo72/VINDecoder.html

My car is THPNNE06984 which shows a build date of December 1973 but it has been titled as a 1974 since new.

Built in July of '72, your car could be one of the very first 'L' models, or one of the very last pre-L models. The '72-L models were much less numerous than either pre-L models or full- L models of '73-74. The '72Ls had L bumpers & the upgraded frame bracing of the Ls but the early gas tank & inside filler with a host of little changes done piecemeal between July '72 & Jan '73. Some cars have been converted from L to pre-L bumpers (and vice-versa) but a good clue is, the L cars tend to weigh 100-150 lbs more than the pre-L cars. Your car was built in '72 but sold in '73 hence was erroneously titled as a '73. Lots of little mistakes were made back then; I know of one Pantera that was titled by the CA DMV as a '72 Lincoln!
