A question: My clutch pedal return spring is broken, and the clutch works perfectly. What does that spring do (besides the obvious)?

It does the obvious
Seriously, a good design would not permit parasitic forces like friction or gravity to influence the operation of the system, so returning the pedal to the nominal, unloaded position is the function of the spring.

As I said, a "good design". Why it is on the Pantera is a mystery we may never understand!

I bet they are broken on 90% of the Pantera's on the road! I am pretty sure they do next to nothing. Mine was also broken from the first day I purchased the car...

I've always taken the effort to replace them on restorations. However, the replacement on my Pantera broke about 1 year ago and I do not recognize any affect on pedal operation or return. I will not replace the spring in the future. I believe it provides no additional benefit.
