Water tubes do NOT need to cross. The bottom of the radiator is the inlet and is connected to the tube fed by the surge tank etc. The top of the rad overflows & is plumbed back to the water pump inlet. This tends to sweep air out of the system & collect it in the surge tank. A few people in love with theory dispute this (stock) hookup, but back-to-back tests on my street car showed that it makes zero difference in how cool the engine runs, at least in a non-racing setup. And a non-crossed tube hookup is simpler & takes shorter hose sections.
