George was nice enough to decode my engine tag.

K-613-J is a 1971 351C-4B motor. What Ford guys call the M code motor.

Quench chamber heads, 2 bolt main bearing caps, small crankshaft dampener, cast flat top pistons, 600 cfm Autolite 4300A carburetor, single point distributor. The motor was built to rev to about 5000 rpm, it had 9.7:1 actual compression ratio (rated at 10.7:1) and gross SAE horsepower was 285.

This engine has the good quench heads (66cc combustion chamber volume). All Cleveland blocks, crankshafts and connecting rods are of the same quality. Even the cast flat top pistons are good to 6000 rpm.

Although the Q code motors had 4 bolt main bearing caps, that's really not an issue to be concerned about with the Cleveland. Even the 2 bolt block will rev to 8000 rpm before the caps begin to "walk".

Garth - want to stay with a Ford powerplant and it will be a late model modular motor. However, that is a ways off as budget is tight and I am going to be working the body over first.

Richard I did make it to a Canadian event several years ago. Dropped off a bit as birth of twins, work, and life consumed a lot of time. Now finally tearing car down for some attention.
I just sold one for $350/complete except for carb.

For anyone thinking of doing a quicky-rebuild for a Pantera or Mustang (e.g- performance use), the stock multigroove valves, keepers, harmonic balancer, timing chain & both sprockets, the weak 40-year-old cast pistons & soft rings should all go directly into the nearest dumpster without bothering to check them. They are all time-bombs waiting for an opportunity...
