Found 2 issues during the prepaint teardown.

Battery had evidently belched acid sometime in the cars past. PO had replaced carpet covering it up. I am looking on the best way to neutralize any residual acid and seal for paint. Wash and rinse with just baking soda, dry and prime? or???

Second is the rust pitting I found under the window. The PO had just smeared the area (uder the window channel) with black silicone, which would only trap moisture in this area to accelerate rusting. After cleaning, I was thinking of either using EASTWOODS body lead product to fill the areas and finish with filler and primer, or using ALLMETAL filler and then prime. I am not familiar with the body lead substitute and how it or its flux would react over time with todays primers/paints or metal. Any thoughts or guidance?

Thanks,
Angelo

Hi Angelo, For the rust in your truck, use a product such as Oxysolve to dissolve the rust and leave a zinc phosphate coating behind which will help prevent future rust. Then the area can be primed and painted as usual. For the pits in your window channel, I would just prime with Feather Fill (spray on two part polyester filler-primer) and block sand the pitted area until it is straight. You would be surprised how much filling the Feather Fill can do with just a couple heavy coats. Good luck....
Angelo,

The rust in the trunk area is not very important. As panteraufo says you can use some kind of rust devolving gel on that or media blast it. The area at the base of your windscreen looks quite bad. Poke it hard with a screw driver, if you go through you must weld in some new metal. If you dont go through you can media blast it. It's essential to remove all the rust form the bottom of the pits. You cant do this with abrasive belts ot discs etc because if there is any rust left in the bottom of the pits it will come back and spoil your day a few years down the road. Nobody likes having to pull their windscreen.

If you have to weld in new metal you could use some heat sinking putty to minimise distortion on the scuttle panel. This area is not too bad to work on as you do have some access to the inside through the holes where the grills fit.

Angelo, neutralize the battery acid and flush with lots of water, dry and get most of the loose rust off with a wire brush, they use Jasco Prep and Prime...one quart at Home Depot is about $10 and would do your whole trunk and probably the entire engine bay...Prep and Prime turns the rust into Iron Phosphate...is super easy to apply with a paint brush, then prime it and it will never rust again.

That's the stuff I used to coat my inner frame rails.

I also used it to neutralize any rust when I repainted the underside of my hood a few years ago:

Thanks for the advice!
I'm now planning on soda blasting the car, that should neutralize the acid while cleaning things up. I've been scraping with the heat gun removing as much junk off of the car as possible before blasting. What a time consuming pain in the rear.

Hard to believe this project started with just a compressor replacement.

Thanks again for the advice.
