Jag, when you completely redo the AC, the old dryer should be replaced as its full of sludge from the dryer pellets grinding against each other for 30 yrs, as well as replacing the valve under the dash. R-12 valves have a filter-screen as protection while 'recalibrated' valves for r-134a do not use a screen. This is to get higher flow rates to compensate for poorer performance of the r-134a freons. There may also be internal differences between the two valves.
