By 1971 hundreds of Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini sports cars had been imported to North America. Plus Jaguar XKEs, Porsche 911s, and Mercedes SLs. There were Shelby AC Cobras and domestically manufactured Corvettes as well.
With this in mind, Alejandro De Tomaso, always brash and outspoken, was quoted circa 1971, saying "The Pantera is the first real sports car to hit the shores of America". It is things like this that I find endearing about Alessandro.
I can't remember the source of that quote however, I can't remember if it was in Ford literature, De Tomaso literature, a book, or from a periodical (magazine). So if any of you know the source, please let me know.
