Kid,

That is part of a modification that was done to the ventilating system. The placard below the knob reads "PULL FOR FLOOR". Pulling the knob directs air to both foot wells. It is referred to as a "Field Fix". This mod removed the duct from the center defroster vent and added two ducts to the two foot wells. It was more involved than that, but that was the end result.

It looks like an early car to me...dash, vents, air knob, seats look like 71. The front turn signals are mounted on pods with a rubber seal behind them. I don't recall seeing them mounted like that on the later cars. I thought they were on a raised bump that was part of the front valance. I have an old Hot Rod mag from 1964, The cover story reads. "How to tag a 64 tail on any Vette" Maybe at one time a newer Pantera was thought to have more value..Bill 1362

Thanks Bill, The owner of 20 years wants to sell,(he's about an hour north of me) I'll have to go and take pictures of the turn signals...the raised bump on the front valance where 73-74s...but it would collaborate the addition of the 73-74 bumpers. It seams that in this case it could of had increased it's value, but now it puzzle it's origins...and furthermore the vin # 1841 would be a 71 not a 72 as he says.

Michel,

When you look at the car, check the build date on the B pillar. The car may have been first sold and first registered in 72. It could also have been a car that was "set aside", and not finished until 72.

In California, the vehicle title went by the date sold. So, a 71 model that was sold in 72 would have been registered as a 72. Later, a second box, Year Model, was added. When this was done, the year from the "Date Sold" box was, by default, entered in that new box by the DMV. This is what happened with my 71. Build date is 5/71, date sold is 1/27/72, and the title/registration shows the Year Model as 72. I went to AAA one year ago and got the title changed to a 71.

The car certainly has all the hallmarks of a '71 and matches mine in those areas (interior, early seats, flat deck lid, left-parking wipers, engine-bay gas filler etc.). The only anomaly seems to be the front end and the windshield surround trim.

You didn't post a full shot of the back, but I'm betting it doesn't have a full-width bumper on it but has the earlier split ones. If that's the case, it is possible that the car was in an accident (possibly very early in it's life) and it was deemed easier to repair by grafting on the bits from a later car (more parts available than earlier cars). Or, as has already been suggested, the chassis could have been set aside and finished much later than the normal VIN sequence. The latter seems less likely given the amount of time it would have sat to get finished with the larger front bumper. Either way, I see no impact (upwards anyway) on value with the later bumpers. It's not like a '71 Hemi Cuda where people go bonkers when it was one of two orange cars ordered with a tach, a glove-box cup-holder AND the passenger-side mirror option... Wink
