I'm having problems. Instead of writing 3 pages of details here, read the details at http://www.geocities.com/pantera_tech/Holley_Carb_Main

Select My Holley Carb Diary.

I've just posted the text, and will add images as available.
Basically, it runs rich, I've tried everything, nothing works, and
I'm about stumped !
(The fuel pump pressure has not changed. I am using a standard fuel pump.)

Chuck,
It sounds like you may have an internal leak. Two things come to mind that can cause this. The first is that the gasket for the power valve can sometimes not center and fuel will leak past the power valve. The second and one which caught me awhile back is that the metering block to carb body gasket can leak if there is any warpage in the parts. This is especially a problem with the reuseable gaskets. I assume that the float levels have been checked and are right.
Good luck and if you are still having trouble you can bring your carb over and we can set it up and test it on the mustang.

Chuck! You have probably already read my topic of "Found cure for flooding carb". Well it turns out that I "fell on my face" as the cure was temperary when sitting and running in my garage, but on the test drive the problem was STILL with me. Yes I did "jump the gun", writing the topic before a true test drive! So it seems the problem kinda comes and goes (intermmitent). So I have extended my search to the distributer. (dual point Accel, NO vac, advance) Because some persons have suggested that an INTERMMITENT problem may point to a worn distributer. And because one of the "causes" I am about to give you, for running rich, or hesitation/bog or even flooding simptyms; was BAD IGNITION CONDENSOR! I am still in the middle of testing,(pulling plugs etc.) but I believe I will be purchasing a new electronic "dizzy". So to make this short, I have read through all of the WEB PAGE materials and made this list of all the causes that "jumped out" at me in MY case, most WILL NOT apply to you! So here goes: 1. The Check ball should remain in the vac. sec. housing. 2. Accelerater pump shooter is too small, low output. Or too big a shooter. 3. NO heat source to choke. 4. Secondary blades Mis-adjusted. 5. Mis-adjusted accelerater pump and/or wrong cam/cam position. 6. Bad ignition condenser. 7. Plugged fuel filter (inside carb). 8. (obvious) Float levels or leaking/sinking float. 9. Vacumn leak. 10. Primary AND secondary blades Mis-adjusted!! (this I found interesting, as the sec. blades could be OPEN TOO FAR, and then the primaries are then CLOSED TOO FAR to compensate and to set a "decent" idle. Or visa/versa if the Sec's. are closed all the way,(they MUST be opened just a "little"), then the primaries are opened TOO far, to compensate, and at that point the IDLE MIXTURE SCREWS will have absolutely NO effect upon the idle itself.) 11. loose float PIN. 12. Gas tank vent clogged/inoperable (the gas filler CAP itself, only releases on VACUMN! It does not release PRESSURE. 13. Secondary NOT opening. Caused by a Stuck Choke/Not all open, from bent part/parts. 14. Wrong main jets. 15. Ignition problems. 16. Gas line too close to heat source. 17. Secondary plates not CLOSING all the way (to proper/set position), sticking (this would cause a very rich condition indeed). 18. Idle jet or Air Bleed(s) clogged. 19. Distributer Worn, not advancing. 20. Defective Electrical Assist to Choke. 21. (I see you have already done) Blown and leaking Power Valve, Diaphram or gasket... Thats all I got! I'am on your side friend! I wish you Good-Luck with all of it! Your Friend Always, Marlin. P.S. You said your fuel pump was "standard". I took it for granted my pump pressure was minimal, until I did the "work" of installing a pressure gauge. Holley, themselves were WRONG about their own fuel pump output. Until you check it yourself, you will never know for sure. An overpressure condition would certainly explain your over-rich condition.

Chuck:
I just went thru the same sort of problem on the wife's 65 Falcon Sprint.
It has a 600 Holley on it and was running so rich that it was puking black soot out the exhaust.
I removed the front bowl and found that the O-ring on the bowl inlet was cracked and brittle allowing gas to pass the valve into the bowl when the valve was closed. (The bowl was full all the time)
I replaced the O-ring and it is as good as new!
Best 5 cents I ever spent.

They matched it at the local parts store. They had a small cabinet with Holly parts. It was actuall free because they didn't charge me. Might cost .13 though, lol.
