click in reverse??

Lloyd, Just test drove a 72 Pre-L with a -2 that seemed like a fine ZF until I let the clutch out in reverse. Rotational click-click-click. Regular and fairly loud, not just a nuisance click. Still made the noise while rolling backwards with clutch pedal pushed down to the floor. Ideas? Steps to take? Ballpark cost?

If it has acorn nuts on the rear cover the studs may have been pulled out and replaced with the long side in, that will rub on the reverse idler gear and make a noise, could also be missing a tooth on one of the small gears.
