I have just pulled trans out do to clutch problems, and found the 3 finger style pressure plate of which the counterweights are hitting bosses inside bellhousing. I want to relace with diaphram style but have many different opinions on what to get. One says centerforce dual friction, someone else says dont get centerforce becuase they had trouble and company wont stand behind them to get Mcloed instead. I dont race the car but do drive it hard. It has a 550HP natuarlly asperated 399 stroker Kuntz & co built engine that runs very strong. I would like to have easier pedal effort than before. What do you recommend I buy so that I can use my same flywheel to? I am also replacing second gear sycro and blocker ring while out..Not as bad to do as I thought. Thanks in advance for any help... Your stock clutch cover has been replaced by someone who knew a little about 351Cs but nothing about Panteras. There are three different 351C Long-style clutch covers: the Pantera type which has NO centrifugal bob-weights on the lever ends, the type where the bob-wts are replaceable, and the Mustang type with large cast-on bob-wts. Type 2 and 3 will hit the inside of the ZF bellhousing. There is an 11" Centerforce clutch that bolts onto your stock Pantera flywheel (p/n DF021048-S). Be sure to insist on the "S" number or you'll get a 10-1/2" clutch that requires a different flywheel (or your stocker must be redrilled). Centerforce is a diaphragm clutch that WILL reduce your pedal effort dramatically, and will hold any horsepower you can cram in there- as long as the job is done right! Remember to replace the throwout bearing and the pilot bushing in the crank end before buttoning up the transaxle. Mac Tilton says that diaphragm clutches require a spherically-crowned throwout bearing while Long style clutches take a flat-face bearing. This is due to the angle the clutch fingers make with the bearing surface. Non-linear pedal engagement results from using the wrong bearing.
Does anyone know where to buy the spherically-crowned throwout bearing quoted in this message? I just bought a complete flywheel and dual friction centreforce clutch from a Pantera supplier and he supplied a flat throw out bearing with it.
