Well, the car started running a little rough, felt like a weak cylinder. I pulled the plugs, they all looked good and about the same. I decided to do a compression test before installing the new plugs.

175 160
170 100
170 160
160 170

I removed the rockers and pumped air into the low cylinder, it came out the front 160 cyl. Guess I am hoping for just a blown head gasket.

And I thought the Alt & reg circuit was this weekends to do item.

Hey Catlover #1682,

Next time you do a check squirt oil in cylinder, trying to oil down piston rings and do your compression check. if your numbers go up its your rings, if the numbers stay the same its more than likely your valves.
Mine's running good but could use some freshing up, I decided to start from scratch & build a 500+ HP all iron engine,

Yup, head gaskets. I did the oil squirt with little difference. Then (with both valves in the closed position) I pumped air into the cylinder with the compressor. Most of the air came out from the cylinder next to it. Some of course came out exhaust and intake but that was from the valves being open in that cylinder.

Just glad that the heads come off quite easily compared to other cars, had it done in 2 days counting the machine shop time.

Good luck,
Angelo
Sorry that I did not respond sooner. I was lucky in that all cylinders eventually came up to over 135 psi. But, I still was unable to get the my car running correctly. After taking it to two local experts both agreed that the Motorcraft carb had to go. I had Miller Performance install a Holley 4150 and the car is now a different animal.

My only problem is a slight surge when running at constant speed. The temperature gauge shows 160 degrees which is the setting on my themostat. I believe that the car should run at between 180 and 190 degrees based on what I have read. I am in the process of changing the thermostat, replscing the hoses, painting the tanks etc and I should be back on the road this weekend.

Hope all is going well with your cars as mine is a blast to drive now that she runs like a Pantera. Bruce32751 - proud owner of 4236
Steve, thanks for the response. If after I finish my latest adventure with raising the operating temperature,I will see how she runs and decide if I still have a problem. If I do, I will move forward with your suggestion. Let me know if the 71's improve your performance.

Have a great day. Bruce32751
