Sadly, not only California. Here in Belgium, part of Europe, they are also thinking of only selling full electric or at least hybrid cars from 2035 on.

What surprises me is that no one is telling what a environmental impact making the batteries have.

I'm not sure it is the answer yet.

But California has always been the front runner on exhaust emmisions. ;-)

Yeah...the California Gov. Jerry Brown (AKA MoonBeam) Has ALWAYS had the MOST Exhaust Emissions coming out of HIM! SAD!
SECTION 1. (a) This act shall be known as The 100 Percent Clean Energy Act of 2018.
(b) The Legislature finds and declares that the Public Utilities Commission, State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission, and State Air Resources Board should plan for 100 percent of total retail sales of electricity in California to come from eligible renewable energy resources and zero-carbon resources by December 31, 2045.

I just reviewed the text of the recently signed California bill and it addresses only the source of electricity delivered by retail providers in the state. It says nothing about mandates or new requirements regarding electric vehicles.

Text of bill can be found here:

P.S. - “Crazy California” = 5th largest economy in the world.
Just a couple of quick thoughts.

No way batteries will be able to replace engines. There's a limited amount of lithium in the world.

So no gas? I guess there will be a mass exodus of really good collector, and other great cars out of California. No more car envy for Californians.

Get ready for a massive utility rate increase.

Yeah, that's green that's environmental saviour. Glad to know US politicans as stupid as european ones. Congrats guys, welcome in the boat of stupidity.

The politicians here play off of the people that support them. We have people in American that have completely bought into the global warming theory and feel that if we don't stop burning fossil fuel now, then we will go past the point of no return and we are all going to die! People somehow seem to overlook the fact that when the sun goes down and the wind doesn't blow, all the nice clean energy goes away and they are then using fossil fuel generated electricity.

..and then we generate engery by COAL!! woow
..we might get the dirty stuff out of the big towns/Cities BUT IF WE GENERATE by Coal or any carbon we do the same thing..well in the "wilderness" from a city standpoint.

..in Europe a mess and driven by un-capable politicians..(TX Gilles..). all driven by lobbies from industries..what a strange world..even here truth is not truth necessarily.. Big Grin

California imports coal generated electricity from Nevada, Utah and Arizona. How strange that they don't want it in their State, but are fine with getting it from somewhere else.

California currently has one coal-fired generating facility. Current out-of-state coal-generated electricity comprises only 6% of the state's total usage.

By 2045, that percentage will be 0%.

Jerry Brown's "clean power" policy was made to oppose Donald Trump's "pro-coal" policies.

...........Perhaps. Or, just maybe, this policy was made to stand in harmony with the rest of the planet's nations that are taking active steps to decrease Mankind's impact on the planet's climate.

Gov. Brown has displayed defiance towards president Trump since he was elected as president.

...........He has a lot of company, and logically so, as the popular vote was NOT won by Trump.

Brown's policies promote the agenda of the people who financially backed him in his campaign for governor.

...........And Trump's policies promote the agenda of the industries who financially backed him in his campaign for president.

This state's politics is unfortunately a 50/50 mix of extreme right and extreme left.

...........Perhaps. Me thinks that is painting the state's demographics with much too broad a brush. The squeaky wheel gets the grease - or, the noisiest political groups get the news coverage.

Bashing California is all the rage for the country's right-leaning segments and Faux news reporting.

Reality is this state is currently the FIFTH largest economy in the WORLD. And we didn't get here by following the status quo; we got here with forward-thinking actions and legislation.

As they say, proof is in the pudding.

I don't bash California. It's an interesting place and very important for the US and world economies, but as a point for objective discussion... it is huge, and has 2/3rds of the US's western coastline.

If you were to carve out a similar shaped piece of real estate along the East Coast of the United States, there is a really good chance you would have a pretty impressive economy that stands up well to international comparisons - and those areas, for the most part, are not governed similarly.

(and then imagine them under a central state government for the last 170 years with all of those House seats in Congress, electoral votes, etc...)
I was over in California recently, I'm afraid polluting the atmosphere with burnt 112 octane race gas, but oh it smelt so sweet.

The irony is that the rice farmers were all burning the fields and there are hundreds of wild fires raging away, but I guess that 'pollution' doesn't count....

Larry,
I'm a native Californian, and I would unequivocally agree that crazy politicians run this state. There are too many crazy policies to list, but let's take the Delta smelt policy. The state has flushed 1.5 trillion gallons of fresh water into the Sacramento Delta to attempt to save this 3" "sardine" at the expense of supplying farmers in the central valley (the breadbasket of the world), with much needed water to grow FOOD! The program has not worked and the smelt is now virtually extinct as are many farmers in the central valley. Other great water management projects include the vast system of concrete channels in southern California that were designed to escort rainwater and runoff out to the ocean as efficiently as possible without any storage capacity for drought conditions.

We have a junior Senator asking the man who would become the head of the CIA about how he intends to deal with global warming, not how he intends to keep Americans safe.

There is nothing but craziness in California politics!
