I'm leaving for Florida from Connecticut in my 71 Pantera on Friday Nov. 2nd. I'm staying with my dad in Palm Beach Gardens and then Flying back on Nov 7. The plan is to leave the car with my father while he re-paints it for me.
I will be flying back down to FL a few times this winter to give him a hand and so we can take both our Panteras out to some local shows (Abacoa). If you are in the area, let me know.

I was hoping to get a few phone numbers of people on the East Coast who live near I-95 incase I have any mechanical issues....Anyone want to volunteer? Smiler

I'm looking forward to this trip....This will be the longest road trip I've ever done in my Pantera.

I also have an early pushbutton, #1022. Here are the best numbers for me by the time you would be this far:

(252) 977-0336 (Rocky Mount house)
(252) 586-2977 (my lake house)

Or that morning you might catch me at (252) 451-8344. I could also arrange to meet you for dinner or whatever, and/or if you need somewhere to crash. I will probably go to my lake house (also somewhat convenient to 95) at some point that evening, but could still hook you up with modest accommodations (and tools) in Rocky Mount regardless.

I'm not close enough to I-95 to offer assistance (but would!) however want to greatly ENCOURAGE you on this journey. You'll remember it forever.

I've made some of my funnest trips EVER in a somewhat unsettled older car with only a toolbox and prayer as my support. A Dino 246 from NYC to Alabama; A 65 'Vette from Chicago; a TR8 from Chicago; An Alfa GTV from West Lousiana (Texas really); an M-roadster from Philly; and (drum roll) a 71 442 from Los Angeles... all to my home in Alabama.

"Fun" does not begin to describe them, and a story or two always emerges...

I burned my arm on a header, ran over a cat, bought oil by the case, made epoxy do things it was never designed for, and found more than a few friends (also known as angels) along the way. I've seen the sunrise on deserted roads at 105 mph, coffee clinched between my freezing thighs, gotten "lost" which turned out better than "found", and had meals to rival a 5-star for 1-star money.

Take a camera, a notebook, and a sense of adventure. Oh, and have fun.

We made it to Florida with no serious mechanical problems. In New Jersey, at the Full Service Sunoco, the attendant put two deep scratches in my quarterpanel. They are 1" long and 1/8" wide...right down to the metal. You can see pictures at the above link.

We averaged 13.65 MPG. By the time we got to FL, the car was running a little rough. The idle was way too low and it backfired sometimes. After checking it out, we found a fuel leak at the carb. Then we noticed that every single sparkplug had loosened up....They were all so loose you could remove them by hand Eeker

We got the car running right...and then we started pulling it apart. We removed the engine, transaxle, and gas tank.... (pictures at above link)

I'm back home now...All in all it was a great trip. We drove at triple digit speeds for long stretches...The car served us very well.
