Most factory units will run the pump for a few seconds to charge the fuel system if you just turn the key to run. Otherwise it gets a signal through the computer that the engine is running. The pump will stay running through a signal from the CPU like forestg states or through the oil pressure switch. Aftermarket systems may use something a little different but work on the same idea.
Some cases if the ECU senses engine revolutions it will turn the pump back on like in a starting situation. Otherwise turning the ignition off then back on will restart the pump.Seeing as you have to turn our keys off before back to start (unless mine is broken) I guess it doesnt matter.
Will does your system have a fuel pressure relief valve in the fuel rails attached to a fuel return line back to the tank .. this would ensure an even pressure in the fuel rails by spilling over back to the tank ?
