Don't split the calipers until you get the pistons out.

Carefully apply air pressure and force the pistons out, maintaining symmetry. Once one of the pistons comes out, the air pressure technique doesn't work as good.

And if the calipers aren't split, the pistons can only hit each other.

You can put a piece (or pieces) of wood between the pistons to control extension.

I separated my calipers with no issues. The problem was trying to get the frozen pistons out, took a lot of break cleaner and force. Also, how could you hone the cylinder bors if you don't split the calipers? After the rebuild kit from HALLS all is fine. Don't forget to get the steel lines and throw out the rubber lines.

Wink Yep, your right about the honing and the piston slide. In most cases it's not necessary but I had to work on getting the pistons out. Could not get good leverage with out splitting the calipers. Once I was able to get them out I wanted to hone just to flatten out any buildup clinging to the pistons. Have not attached a pic to the board, I did an attachment of the caliper hope the pic shows up.
