I replaced my guage with a white vdo and had to change the sending unit. Its very simple to replace,it only screws into the top of the tank. The only problem is that you have to remove the side window to replace it.The side window comes out by pushing it from the back side out.Their are 3 wires hooked to the factory guage at the sending unit, you only use the ground and main guage register wire. The 3rd wire is the low fuel light warning wire and is not used on the replacement vdo guage.I might suggest that if you go this route, while you have the window out, replace the fuel valve on the top of the tank with the rollover type with the check valve built in.

Thanks for the info! I'm changing mine to match the other VDO gauges I've installed. Is there a certain sender I need? I noticed they make several.

And another question:
Like an idiot, I disconnected the fuel gauge without labeling everything in case I wanted to put it back. Well, now I'd like to put it back in until I change the sender. I've studied my wiring diagram but am not sure where some of the wires go on the gauge. The only markings are for "+" (the pink wire) and "com"? Which terminals are for the ground, sender, and low fuel indicator? What an idiot..... learned my lesson on this one!

thanks,
-Richard
