I am still on the original gas tank and would like to remove it this winter for a good cleaning and to replace/repair the sending unit. I know the sending unit can be removed easily without removing the tank, I've done it before.

Should the tank need replacement, who has replacement tanks?

Thank you,

Tom

Sadly, No it can not! I just did the same on my car. Engine out (and zf), also remove the shifting linkage to zf. I blasted my gas tank and epoxy primed the outer surface. Inside you can buy some sealer made for covering all minor pin holes. Its pretty easy to use. I also used the buttom plug to be the future supply line instead of soaking from the top fitting.

I had my OEM tank replaced back in June due to to the new fuels eating the sealer off the inside of the tank which had been on there since a bought the car in 1990.  I could have had it cleaned out and reused it but didn’t want to deal with it again to due rust later on so I went with a s/s tank.  The quality on the new tank was ok, but if I were to do it again I found a few places that would make the tank in s/s or aluminum for cheaper and from what I have seen on one of the companies website, better quality.
Rock Valley Stainless Tanks is one of them.  They usually build them in s/s but would build them in aluminum as well.  The only thing is it would take about 12 weeks for it to be built and possibly sending in them your old tank so they could replicate it.  From the pictures I have seen the quality of their work is very good.
